Protetto: Fractional cello strings and varnished strings

On the possibility of using fractional cello strings for cello da spalla, and on varnished strings.

12th of June 2019

We started considering the option of using a A string of 1/8 cello to tune up to e on cello da spalla. The idea is good but the calculations proved it false, we need a longer instrument than that, ideally a 63cm vibrating length which is a bit longer than a 3/4 cello. So, maybe a light tension of a 3/4 cello would work, switching all the strings tuning them up of a fifth. But we have the problem of the low C...

Here in the box below you can find my calculations for this idea of Paul, in which I used the simplified formula from Toyohiko Satoh but I simply didn't take care of all the things that are not variables. So, the gauge is not variable as we are looking into the possibility to use a given string, and also the tension is not a variable because we are trying to keep the same tension, more or less.

After discussing this topic I gave a short presentation on the issue of Varnished strings. Here summer is approaching so people is asking about how Varnished strings are, or are not, a good idea to have longer lasting strings. Attached is the draft of my report, I will soon share the definitive version.

Below here is the video recording, thanks for watching and see you soon!
